Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Program

Come celebrate the man that is Martin Luther King, Jr. by joining the African American Student Association in a march from Norse Commons and a presentation by veteran civil rights attorney Fred Gray. Gray has been committed to righting the wrongs in civil rights for over 45 years and has represented Mrs. Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in civil suits. An advocate for changing the social fabric of America, Gray is sure to spark hope, determination and awareness within audiences of all ages. All march participants are encouraged to create their own tasteful posters that support civil rights. Meet at the Norse Circle at 1:30 p.m. Commemoration program will begin at 2:15 p.m. in Otto Budig Theater.

Koresh Dance Company

Renowned for its powerful stage presence and high-energy style, Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company has been hailed as an extraordinary force on the national stage. Founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director Ronen Koresh, the troupe presents an exciting and emotional blend of ballet, modern and jazz molded into a style of choreography that is both eloquent and explosive. There is something for everyone in Koresh’s exhilarating performances.

Fisk Jubliee Singers Concert

Kick off Black History Month with the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, young men and women, vocal artists and students of Fisk University in Nashville, who sing and travel worldwide. The original Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals. They broke racial barriers in the late 19th century and entertained kings and queens in Europe. At the same time they raised money in support of their beloved school.

The Azmari String Quartet: The Seven Last Words of Christ

It took Joseph Haydn fifteen years to complete his groundbreaking Oratorio "The Seven Last Words of Christ.” The orchestral version was so popular that Haydn arranged the seven slow movements for string quartet. The Azmari Quartet will present this amazing piece, which Haydn valued as one of his greatest works, in a special free concert in the NKU Art Gallery.

Symphonic Winds Spring Tour Kick-Off

The Taming of the Shrew

Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy of love and marriage, “The Taming of the Shrew” brings the battle of the sexes to stage in February. Young Bianca has several suitors for her hand, but her wealthy father refuses to let her marry until her defiant, sharp-tongued elder sister Kate is wed. The fortune-hunting Petruchio agrees to marry Kate, but will he actually be able to break her of her unruly ways? Meanwhile, Bianca’s men have disguised themselves in order to woo her and win her father's approval. Will anyone live happily ever after? Web Application Security Seminar

This workshop will explain the most common security attacks against web applications, such as cross-site scripting and SQL injection, then teach you the software security techniques you need to protect your web application from them. Certificate in Business Informatics Online Information Session

If the career you have planned will deal with computers, databases, projects, or financial business activities, then you will likely benefit from a Certificate in Business Informatics. Students learn how to apply computer technology to the world of business. Classes provide an overview of how computers are used in the business world and concentrate on practical skills such as problem solving, project management, database design, web programming, business process analysis and quantitative analysis. This four-course Certificate of Business Informatics is offered online.

GRE Test Preparation - Intensive Weekend Course

The Graduate Record Examination General Test measures skills in verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing. This intensive weekend review course taught by content specialists will help you become familiar with the test, practice the types of questions appearing on the test, and improve your chances of achieving your goal score. One day is devoted to the verbal sections, and one day addresses the quantitative section. Global Perspectives Lecture Series

“Poets, Mudfish, and the Dew of Wisdom: Dislocations in Faraway Places”

Dr. Kevin Kirby, the Evan and Lindsay Stein Professor of Biocomputing in the Department of Computer Science will present episodes from and reflections on his experiences leading students on service learning trips abroad, as well as his time as a visiting professor overseas. His talk will focus on the physical and personal landscapes of three cities, Seoul, Mexico City, and Cologne. The lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow. Bachelor of Health Science Online Information Session

The Bachelor of Health Science degree is an interdisciplinary program that provides an opportunity for radiology/imaging professionals, respiratory therapists and allied health professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills, improving the possibility for career mobility. Starting January 2008, this fully online degree program is designed for individuals who have earned an associate degree or are completing their professional coursework, in an approved allied health discipline and want to expand their education.

Lincoln Bicentennial Lecture

You are invited to celebrate the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial and Black History Month by attending the first lecture in the NKU Lincoln Bicentennial Lecture Series. Dr. Christopher Phillips, Associate Professor of History, University of Cincinnati, will speak on "The Ten Year War: Abraham Lincoln and the Coming of the Civil War in the Ohio Valley." Finding our Roots

NKU’s African American Student Association is proud to present Rick Kittles, geneticist, professor and author. He currently serves as the scientific director of the Washington, D.C.-based African Ancestry Inc., a genetic testing service for determining individuals' African ancestry and as an associate professor in the Section of Genetic Medicine of the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Shrinking the Gap with Dr. Ian Smith

NKU’s African American Student Association is proud to present physician, author, TV/radio peronality, and health advocate Dr. Ian Smith, currently the medical/diet expert on VH1’s highly-rated “Celebrity Fit Club,” host of “Meet the Faith” on BET, and the creator and founder of The 50 Million Pound Challenge. Dr. Smith is also the host of his own nationally syndicated radio show HealthWatch on American Urban Radio Networks. Kentucky Native Plant Series: Plant Communities of Kentucky

This course will deal with the identification and distribution of plant communities in Kentucky. Communities will include forest types, native grasslands, glades, savannahs, and wetlands. Emphasis will be placed on community structure by identifying both dominant and indicator species. Influencing factors such as soil type, moisture, topography, and geology will be discussed. Additional emphasis will be placed on rare or unusually sensitive plant communities. The course will be taught through a combination of lecture and slide presentations.  At least one field trip is planned. This course is for the amateur naturalist or plant enthusiast and is also part of the core requiremements for the Kentucky Native Plant Society's certificate program in native plant studies.

Kentucky Native Plant Series: Kentucky's Spring Wildflowers

If you have good familiarity with basic descriptive plant terminology, join this class and learn to use the technical plant identification keys for the spring wildflowers of Kentucky. The distinctive features of some of the more common spring wildflowers will be emphasized. This course is designed for the amateur naturalist or plant enthusiast and is a core course offered as part of the Kentucky Native Plant Society's certification program in native plant studies.

Learning to Sign: American Sign Language Level 1

If you communicate regularly with people who are severely hard-of-hearing or Deaf, or if you have an interest in learning sign language, this class is for you. Emphasis is placed on signs, finger spelling, syntax, grammar and receptive skills in this six-week non-credit course.

Reinventing Retirement: JumpStart Workshop for 50+ Workers

Summer Camp: Journalism in the Digital Age, Grades 9-12

NKU’s College of Informatics will prepare journalists of the future for the newsrooms of the 21st century with a weeklong day camp that combines traditional journalistic principles with the latest trends in the media industry. Participants will gain hands-on experience in media techniques, including writing, reporting and photography for print publications, along with audio and video production for the web.
